Towards a new Beginning…. Happy 2009

First Let me wish you and your Family a very very Happy, holy, prosperous and successful Year Ahead.

I have a very strange thought in my mind. Imagine if we never had a concept of time, day, month and year. It wound have been a different world with confusion, chaos and ….

But with the concept of time, day, month and year in place, every 365 days we get an opportunity to look back into our past, learn, correct and grow. Every year brings to us a book with 365 new pages to script our life newly.

2008 has been the most dramatic and traumatic year to everybody. People have lost their wealth and job due to global economic turmoil, lost their beloved ones due to terror attacks and other calamities.

The New Year has come, for us to make a new beginning.

When the sun sets on 31 December and rises on 1st January noting in reality changes. But we look forward to the dawn of Jan 1st with loads of hopes, with optimistic outlook, with a list of new resolutions (irrespective of we follow them or not ) , new dreams to realize and Goals to be reached.

I pray that every dawn in the coming year bring us the same feeling of Dec 31st. God bless us with Strength to face the realities of life, Patience to hold ourselves from break down, and purity to reach HIM.

I would like to thank my dad, mom and brothers, relatives, friends and colleagues for all the beautiful moments in the previous year and wish for the same in the years ahead.

I would like to leave with the thought below:

Retrospection

God knows what prevented me from blogging for last 2 months. Neither was I busy doing anything nor was I free. I guess that line suggests that I have been living in a state of confusion :)

Can we extract a chicken from egg by heating it or should it be incubated. Both provide the heat, one kills and the other creates. Wondering why am I telling all this here? Sorry I am just sharing a thought with you.

How I wish, in life, we all get instant results. But is it all possible every time? It’s a yes and a no.

But yes, nothing is impossible too. All that is required is a Plan, Focus, Sincerity and smart work. Why am i telling all this here? Well, i guess that is what has been missing in me for last couple of days.

There was no plan for whatever I did, no plan lead to no focus, with too many things remaining incomplete. Incomplete targets lead to not so sincere or expected results. There was just hard work put in.

All that I want to tell here is Plan, be focused, be sincere and put in smart work.

Incredible INDIA or Inevitable INDIA

I was reading an essay by a renowned historian on post Indian Independence.

It goes (not in exact words of author) –

"It was summer of 1948, independent India was plagued by problems. One side there were communal forces creating walls and taking lives on other side there was communist force which wanted to take away India from Democracy. On onside there were 8 million people who were refugees driven from Pakistan who needed food, shelter and a sense of citizenship and on the other side there 500 princely states which were breaking away and needed to be integrated into Indian Republic. The world had only one question in mind WILL INDIA SURVIVE? "

Its August 2008...mostly rainy season 62 years into independence. We have been able to travel a long way from WILL INDIA SURVIVE? To INCREDIBLE INDIA.

People of Independent India have been able to answer the world its question in the most incredible way. It was all possible due to those great leaders of Indian Independence, Who had honest intentions and wee sincere in efforts.
Now again the world has only one question WILL INDIA BE A SUPERPOWER?

This time it’s You and Me who have to answer this question. Look at India. Again it’s the same scenario as 1948. Communal ism is on a rise, Corruption at its peak, Commercialism leading to unwanted inflation, Terrorism a regular enemy, states fighting for their own benefits and the worst of all People who don’t care what happens to the country. Will INCREDIBLE INDIA be a victim and become INEVITABLE INDIA?

Let’s take responsibility and act.

Praying for welfare of people and families struck in the recent serial bomb blasts in Bangalore and Ahmadabad.

Points to introspect.

Well if we have a bike our expectations could be
1. Performance …fuel efficiency...for every pie we spend on fuel we want to drive more…get more output.
2. Smart…we want our bike to be a smart one…look wise, usability wise
3. Longevity… we want our vehicle to last long…we wish at least that it remains all our life
4. Dependable..Failure free…to function right always..more importantly during emergencies

Well Now if I was employer…what would i expect from employee...
1. High Performance
2. Smart work
3. Association with the organization
4. Dependable…and become valuable.

At times I am amazed by life... Expectations of every person is same at ground level.
People tell "put yourself in others shoe and look at things as to how they feel". I guess we don’t need to do that. Please stand firmly within you own shoe and look at the world. It can probably give you better grip than the other person shoe...and just don’t see things (seeing sometimes is deceiving)... look at them…it will teach a lot.

Life reciprocates …what we give we get…give the best…best will be ours.

Practical or Not Practical??

Time and again i have heard people telling that they are confused between practical / impractical / should I listen to my heart???

Please can somebody help me???

Well let me s tart in my usual style, Dictionary(believing that people have thought before adding it here and this is what is largely means and accepted :) ) defines it as
Practical:
1. Concerned with actual use or practice
2. Guided by practical experience and observation rather than theory

If we try to be practical by dictionary meaning (1)… we would not be flying planes today, we would not have landed on moon... We would not have built bridges across rivers because none of them were in use or practice at one time

(2) on other hand emphasizes on putting the thought, experience and observation into action

But today word practical is being used to mean acceptance by society, family, friends...

That’s where the confusion is. No where in (1, 2) it talks about our ideas, thoughts, and actions being scrutinized and approved by any 3rd person...though it could also mean feasibility. If people, who have invented / discovered things, had believed in (1)…we would be still under cover of leaves…and you would not be reading this….

Don’t break your head too much ...

Anyways my conclusion: there is nothing like Practical or impractical
It’s just that as of today we don’t have infrastructure needed to do some things..so they are classified as not practical/feasible...but with Time, Plan, Skill, Confidence, Struggle ,Hard work(TPSCSH) we can develop that infrastructure and everything can be achieved. Be it related Life/Love/Science/Business

TPSCSH is important in that order because realizing what we want /need takes Time, Things will not happen in moments unless it’s a movie, but we are talking about life. With available time we need to Plan, and then to execute that plan we need Skill and Confidence to be ready to face any situations to remain focused and unshaken. More importantly it’s a Struggle and needs hard work. With the right mixture of TPSCSH we can achieve everything.

Given above mentioned things practically everything is possible.

But still remember that not everything can be done so easily. For example we cannot always save a human on his death bed. Some things can probably never be done by Humans.

So practically everything is possible.

Don’t ask is it practical or not? Ask is it right or wrong?. This is where your HEART comes into picture. You will be the best person to answer this because right/wrong depends on Place/Time/Context…and sometimes even on People.

Adjust ??

"Everything that needs to be invented is already invented". This sounds very realistic and convenient to me and many of my types. But it took one special day to realign my thoughts to reality that "NOT Everything that needs to be invented is already invented".

It was Friday the June 28, it’s was UNIKode at DNBTUADC (Dun and Bradstreet Transunion Analytics and decision center, Chennai), a day dedicated to discuss ideas, innovations, and looking at the world in a all new perspective. Every year at DNB we celebrate this day, a day dedicated to ideate, innovate, and implement new solutions to current concerns.

I believe an organization where ideation and innovation is continuous strategy and where each employee of the organization shares the same vision soon emerges as an pioneer in the market.

I feel that I am on the job of Innovation, ideation, incubation, invigoration, implementation...

The Ten Commandments of Coding

On Friday evening i accidentally happened to come across a list of these (ALMOST) ten commandments on coding. Thought it would help us to be more professional in our acts, particularly for software engineers

1.Understand and accept that you will make mistakes. The point is to find them early, before they make it into production. Fortunately, except for the few of us developing rocket guidance software , mistakes are rarely fatal in our industry. We aren’t surgeons; we can learn, laugh, and move on.
2.You are not your code. Remember, the entire point of a review is to find problems, and problems will be found. Don’t take it personally when a problem is uncovered.
3.No matter how much karate you know, someone else will always know more. This fact kept the samurai from indiscriminately attacking people in Imperial Japan. In our less violent times, such an individual can teach you some new moves if you ask. There will always be people who know more than you. Seek and accept input from others, even when you think it’s not needed.
4.Don’t rewrite other programmers’ code. There’s a fine line between "fixing other programmers’ code" and "rewriting other programmers’ code." The former implies that a bug or other functionality problem exists and needs to be fixed and can also refer to correcting gross readability problems. The latter, however, refers to changes made to code for the sake of style. Programmers fresh from college are often guilty of this. Things like renaming variables, use of a different construct, recommenting, or gratuitous reformatting of white space fall into this category. Such activities, even with the purest of motive, are high hubris and detrimental to team mentality.
5.Treat people who know less than you with respect, deference, and patience. Nontechnical people who deal with developers on a regular basis almost universally hold the opinion that we are prima donnas at best and crybabies at worst. Becoming angry only reinforces this perception and teaches people to avoid asking questions. This can only harm your work in the long run.
6.The only constant in the world is change. Be open to it and accept it with a smile. Look at each change to your requirements, platform, or tool as a new challenge, not as some serious inconvenience to be fought.
7.The only true authority stems from knowledge, not from position. Knowledge engenders authority, and authority engenders respect—so if you want respect in an egoless environment, cultivate knowledge.
8.Fight for what you believe but gracefully accept defeat. Understand that sometimes your ideas will be overruled. Even if you do turn out to be right, don’t take revenge or say, "I told you so" more than a few times at most, and don't make your dearly departed idea a martyr or rallying cry.
9.Don’t be "the guy in the room." Don’t be the guy coding in the dark office emerging only to buy cola. The guy in the room is out of touch, out of sight, and out of control and has no place in an open, collaborative environment
10.Critique code instead of people -- be kind to the coder , not to the code. As much as possible, make all of your coments to positive and oriented to improving the code. Relate comments to local standards, program specs, increased performance , etc

Last night i was watching Rang De Basanthi for may be for the 25th time, no matter the number, each time I see it, I am charged with energy, but also feel guilty for not sticking to the resolution I make at the end of it.

The message is loud and clear

Living an extraordinary life requires three things:

1. Understanding what we really want
2. How we know when we have it
3. How we create results in our lives

But the most difficult of the three questions being the #1.
If only we know what we really want out of this life we can make wonders.

Let us take time to answer these questions. Let us make a difference.

It was time for me to travel away from my home pitch :) in search of "better career".

I felt a bit lonely ... felt strange...it was moment before i consoled myself.

It was a conscious choice i needed to make again.

I can't erase what happend in the past, but future is in my hands.

Preaching Peace Through Music : Roy Wooten

If there is a thing on earth which can come nearest to expressing the inexpressible it is Music. Somebody rightly said "Music is what feelings sound like". True it is.

I was Lucky to attend a concert by RoyEl Wilfred Wooten, better known by his stage name Future Man. Roy Wooten is a two-time Grammy Award-winning performer with Béla Fleck and the Flecktones. For the Flecktones, he plays the Drumitar, a novel electronic instrument of his own invention. He was touring India recently and as Luck would grace, Roy and his team, which he had created in few days of his travel, were performing for COMPASSITES, a software company where i am currently working.

what amazed me was that at his organizing power because he had manged to get people from different countries and different traditions together and created a winning team, which won the hearts of one and all present there. The Team had 15 members from different countries and traditions. Each was a master in their own way. Most Surprising thing was that each member of the team had met each other for less than a weeks time, practiced for even lesser time. But their performance outspoke this truth. It looked as if they had known each other for a years. The string binding them was Music and love for it. It showed that great things can be achieved with unity and
understanding.

They were trying to send to message for world Peace. True it was accepted with grace by the audience who danced to their tunes. They touched the hearts of audience in 1 and half hour of their music rendering

How to Put Career on Fasttrack?

First thing let me tell you here that I am a toddler to talk on this topic ,But still I am going to pen down some of the things which i strongly believe and also will help all the readers to some extent.

They say "Winners struggled when Losers slept". Success is all about going an "Extra Mile".

Take for instance writing an exam "Reading little more than required gives you good a chance to succeed"
GoogleMaps is an example for "Reading more than required" and its pleasure to use it.
you probably like many things in life be it a person, a hotel, a movie.. because you always get more than you expected from them in one form or the other.

One of my friends works at an IT company. Being a good friend of his i very well know that he does tasks to best. It was time for his appraisals and he was with his manager. My friend asked for promotion (confident that he had been doing a great job).The reply he got was very straight "what extraordinary thing you have done to get what you are asking".

What i got from the incident was "Being good is not good enough".
Just doing what we are supposed to do will keep us where we are and does not lead to what we want to become. Its always that "Extra Mile" - doing more than what is expected takes us up in the ladder.

If we want to go up in your career from where you are now.
First Identify where you want to go, call it GOAL.
Measure the delta between where you are now and your GOAL.
Walk an extra mile to fill in that delta.
Soon you will be at your GOAL.

#Dil Chahta Hai....Dil mange More

Hey...don't get amused, neither i am talking of a movie or marketing for a product over here.

I am talking of you, me and rest of us. Yes the above lines talk of our dreams...something we want.... to achieve, to live, to be. Each one of us has a dream. Why only a few realize their dreams? what is wrong with vast majority of us?

why don't we chase our dreams and make them real...??
I got a friendly list which explains US the most about ourselves

#1. Complacency.
#2. Laziness.
#3. Not keeping the promise we make to ourself.

I would keep the list in that order because the one which comes last in the list acts as a foundation to the ones mentioned above it. They(#1 & #2) under the nourishment of #3.

New year comes, B'Day comes, occasions come, we make promises to ourself to grow, to achieve but how many of us make it come true. We don't want others to cheat us...then have we questioned why are we cheating ourselves. Think over it. Its still never late.

Who is Responsible?

The above question is good enough to start a blame game which will spread like flame. Most of us are reluctant to take responsibilities. Be it in any field.

It was during a chat over the dinner that someone in the group mentioned that today entertainment and media people are misleading the younger generation. From another person's view the media is just reflection of what society is. It actually takes minutes to decide on this, but argument can go on for ever.

Its said that "well started is half well done". As a child we start learning from whatever we see, ear, and exposed to. Now if a child gets to see only the positive, good and right things of life it will go on to influence the child in a right way.

But looking at things to which a curious, innocent, ready to learn and always learning young immature mind of a child is being exposed to sends me a not so positive message.

If at all our media and entertainment industry strive to project the right and good things, creating inspiring a and motivational entertainment, If at all our media and entertainment industry strive to focus on more important aspects of life and country without catering to petty publicity stunts, things could be lot more better.

I am not asking you here to clear your throats to raise your decibel levels and form a moral brigade to voice your opinions against the media and entertainment industry. But its a food to exercise your sleeping mind to run into utopia.

The Pursuit Of HappYness

I guess the title of this post reminds you of a movie, my points to you for this guess.

The movie very well drives home the point that "we need to pursue happiness". There are qualified critics who tell that movie should have been called "The pursuit of RichYness" because the movie relates happiness to money. I strongly agree with all those who say this only for the reason that everyone has freedom to express his views and each one has his own way of looking at things.

My views:

Happiness depends/is

1. State of mind, meaning that we choose to be happy/unhappy.

2. Need of hour being achieved, meaning a beggar is happy if his needs for the day is fulfilled.

3. The reason to be happy varies with people(time/context/needs). (Hi critical critics, this where probably we need to focus)

I am not trying to promote the movie here. But i just wanted to share my views. The movies does throw light on what i have said above.

My feelings after seeing the movie:

1. Thanked god and my parents for all that they have done for me

2. Not to get irritated with people(salesman/vendors..etc) who pester on the streets/calls.

3. "Pursue happiness"

"Be happy and Make others Happy" Remember that it is we who make the choice and create situations.

Since 2 days cupid has been scratching my back :). Hmmmm...so by now you know what i am planning to scribble.

Somebody said "Love is Blind". I believe whoever it is, had laid foundation for the very much explainable insantiy that prevails with respect to Love. Generation today has abided by every word of this quote and has been doing everything possible to justify this.

But i am still not sure what exactly "Love" means. I have read many stories and many more quotes defining and discribing love. All that happend was one more explanation for love got added to my repository.

One of my friend defined love ...his views on understanding of the present generation about love ...he says "Love is an emotional immaturity".

We are very much confused between 'Love' and 'Like'

"Like has dependency factor, Love is Independent".
"Like has expectations, Love is not".
"Like is selfish, Love is Selfless".

Example : We like somebody, somethings etc..because its beautiful we may call this Love. But love is beyond this.

Love is love ...nobody can probably can ever define love which satisfies all...

Faith can move mountains...who has not heard of this quote.

History records numerous instances to prove the power of FAITH.

But I guess today what we call 'faith' is as capricious as Indian cricket and its presence is proportional to the situations we are in.

Most often 'faith' is subjected to test and this paves way to conflict between mind and heart. Faith is at its peak when we are born. A child grows to lose its innocense, in so called secular knowledge, faith still remains but in traces.

May be i am beating around the bush trying to expalin 'faith' and its power. All that i want to tell is that Faith can make miracles happen. Have faith in youself, and the unseen.Close your eyes, take a deep breath, wake up your mind and heart and say to yourself thrice "I have faith in YOU" imagineing the force that holds the universe entering you. Do it everyday as you wake up. See the difference you make from NOW.

How often we have taken advise from others? and how many times we have chosen to advise somebody?

At times we are in dilemma as:
1. What to do?
2. To do or not to do.
3. what should I choose?....i can go on
Ask your mind for more situations that could freeze otherwise bubbling YOU.

Experience is the best way to learn. But intellectuals say that life is too short to go through every situation and learn. So learn from other's experience.

Everytime you give a suggestion or an advise to somebody try to pen it onto a notepad. Read this collection at leasure. I will not be surprised if you wonder at your own ability.

All that I wanted to say can be put as

Be like a River....

Life originated in water. Water has been the most essential thing for life. 70% of earth is water. 70% of human body is water. River beds have been the cradle for civilizations to start, grow and become what they are today.

Wondering why i am talking so much about river(water). Probably there is lot to learn from it to make our life better.

I am just trying to put my observations here:

1. River has no boundaries. It creates a boundary for itself and remains there. Our life is also like a river. We live in the boundaries created by ourselves. It's our decision to limit our boundaries. Sky is the limit(probably not even that..) for those who dare to dream Big.

2. No force can stop a river. It makes it way through all obstacles, its flexible and knows where it has to go. And it reaches there. We also need to be flexible and make our way through all obstacles. More importantly we should know where we want to go. Observe how river changes its direction when something lies on its way. It does not change the goal , but finds another route to its destination. Change your route not your goal.

3. On its course of journey a river helps many, feeds many, and saves many. In our pursuit of success we also need to remember there are few obligations towrads our family, society, and humanity as a whole.

Lot more can be said....let us learn form nature.

Dream Big, Be Flexible, Chart your Goals, Remember your Obligations, Space and Time will join hands in your pursuit of success.

Change your route not your goal.

Beauty In Life...don't miss This

An elderly Chinese woman had two large pots, each hung on the ends
of a pole, which she carried across her neck.

One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect and
always delivered a full portion of water. At the end of the long walk
from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.

For a full two years this went on daily, with the woman bringing home
only one and a half pots of water.

Of course, the perfect pot was proud
of its accomplishments. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its
own imperfection, and miserable that it could only do half of what it had
been made to do.

After 2 years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, it spoke to
the woman one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, because this
crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house.

The old woman smiled, "Did you notice that there are flowers on your
side of the path, but not on the other pot's side?" "That's because I have
always known about your flaw, so I planted flower seeds on your side
of the path, and every day while we walk back, you water them."

"For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to
decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, there
would not be this beauty to grace the house."

Each of us has our own unique flaw. But it's the cracks and flaws we each
have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding.

You've just got to take each person for what they are and look for

What makes an ordinary an extraordinary is that extra...(i guess every body agrees with it)...
-Extraordinary person doesn't do different things ...he does things
differently
-He learns from others experience...i mean a very fast learner
-Plans his work ahead...manages time very well
-He is a BRAND by Himself.

List would grow ...but this would just trigger you to think along these lines if you want to be an extrordinary...

But some know how to manage them....our approach to those problems will determine our level of happiness ...

Loving what we do is not necessray but is a pre-requisite for our success in our job.
